Attorney Ted Sumner

Legal Background

Theodore (Ted) Sumner has been practicing law since 2000.  Throughout that time his career has focused on litigation before all levels of courts.  Mr. Sumner is admitted to practice law before the United States Court of Appeals for Veterans Claims, the Department of Veterans Affairs, the United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit, the United States District Court for the District of Oregon, the United States District Court for the Western District of Washington, the Oregon Supreme Court, and the Washington Supreme Court.  In addition, Ted Sumner went through the VA disability process in 1996.  During law school he worked for the Department of Veterans Affairs Regional Counsel's office in Portland, Oregon.
 
Lawyer Ted Sumner's experience has given him the ability to navigate the complexities presented by VA benefit issues.  As a recipient of many of the benefits himself, he has first hand knowledge of how he obtained the benefits himself.  

 Military Background

Ted Sumner began his military career directly out of high school by enlisting in the United States Coast Guard.  After boot camp, his first duty station was the small boat station located in Westport, Washington.  He was promoted to Seaman, E-3, before he left approximately 7 months later.
 
Mr. Sumner was transferred from Westport to the Naval Academy Preparatory School in Newport, Rhode Island.  He was there for about one year before he was accepted to the United States Coast Guard Academy.  Ted Sumner graduated from the Coast Guard Academy in 1993 and was commissioned as an Ensign.  His first duty station was the USCGC Mellon, a high endurance cutter.  He developed medical issues on the Mellon that eventually lead to his leaving the service in 1996 when he commenced the VA disability process.
